Your homeowners insurance policy will provide you with coverage in a wide variety of events. However, one thing your homeowner’s insurance policy will not cover is damages due to neglect. Most insurance policies, regardless of what you’re trying to insure, will have a clause stating that the protection the policy provides does not extend to damages due to failing to maintain the home. With that in mind, here are a few simple home maintenance tips from Insurance SCV.

Inspect Your Roof

The roof is one of the most important parts of your home – that is, unless you enjoy getting rained on. Generally, the roof is pretty sturdy, but no matter what kind you have, you should always give it a good look at least once a year. It only takes one small hole to let in water that could potentially cause serious damage.

Replace the Batteries in Your Smoke Detectors

As long as they’re in good working order, smoke detectors are life savers. You should check yours every few months to make sure the batteries are in good working order. Some smoke detectors will beep when the battery starts to get low, others will not.

Drain Your Water Heater

Despite the fact that you use it all the time, water heaters are appliances that are all too often forgotten. Over time, sediment builds up inside and makes the machine use more energy to keep your water hot. By draining it once every six months or so, you’ll not only prolong the life of your water heater, but you’ll save money on the electric bill!

When you keep your home in good shape, the odds of something going wrong go down significantly. If something does go wrong, you’r homeowners insurance is much more likely to cover it.
